Wausau, WIS – The Wisconsin Woodchucks held on in the ninth inning Wednesday night to defeat the Kenosha Kingfish 9-8 at Athletic Park.
The Woodchucks were first on the scoreboard for the sixth consecutive game. Wisconsin got three runs in the third inning. Ty Black walked with two outs and advanced on a wild pitch. Yusuke Akitoshi scored him with a single to right field, and Albee Weiss cleared the bases with a two-run jack, his ninth home run of the season.
Kenosha tied the game in the fifth. They scored three runs on one error and three hits, finished off by a 2-RBI single from Zack Weigel.
Wisconsin re-gained the lead in the sixth. Ramsey Romano led off the frame with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Ryan Day. Jared Oliva looped a singled into center field with two down to plate Romano and put the Chucks up 4-3.
The Woodchucks broke the game open in the seventh with five runs. They got five hits in the frame, including singles from Akitoshi, Weiss and Ryan Day and doubles from Black and LJ Hatch.
Kenosha rallied in the ninth. They scored five runs on six walks and two singles in the frame before Robert Zeigler recorded the final out to secure the sweep for the Chucks.
Simon Mathews started and went six innings on the bump. He allowed just four hits and three runs, one of them unearned, and struck out four. Kyle Dohy relieved him and went two and two thirds before Zeigler shut the door.
With the sweep, the Woodchucks move to 17-31 on the season and 5-8 in the second half. They now hit the road for four games in Michigan before the all-star break.
