Battle Creek, MI – Mason Fishback hit a grand slam Thursday night to lift the Wisconsin Woodchucks past the Battle Creek Bombers 7-2 at C.O. Brown Stadium.
The Woodchucks put up a big number in the third inning. Ryan Day doubled to lead off the frame and proceeded to score on a wild pitch. Then, three consecutive walks set the table for Mason Fishback, who delivered his grand slam to make it 5-0 Wisconsin.
Battle Creek responded with runs in the third and the fourth, one of which came off a Niko Pacheco solo home run, but the Chucks got runs in the fourth too.
Max Ponzurick led off the fourth by reaching on an error. He moved to second on a single from Al Molina, and then Ramsey Romano replaced Ponzurick on the basepaths. Oliva scored Romano with a single, and Owen Taylor plated Molina with a ground out, so the Chucks were up 7-2 through four innings.
That lead held behind stellar Woodchuck pitching. Jared Skolnicki led the surge on the mound for the Wisconsin. In his seventh start of the season, Skolnicki went six innings, gave up six hits and two runs and struck out six to earn his fourth victory of the year.
Reagan Biechler threw two hitless innings of relief, and Connor Kelly pitched the ninth to seal the third straight Woodchuck win.
The Woodchucks and Bombers play again tomorrow night at C.O. Brown Stadium before Wisconsin plays a two-game set with the Kalamazoo Growlers.
