Woodchucks Drop Season Opener 7-1

Green Bay, WIS- The Wisconsin Woodchucks (0-1) dropped their first game of the 2017 season to the Green Bay Bullfrogs (1-0) by a final score of 7-1 on Tuesday night at Joannes Stadium in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

Green Bay got its offense going early, scoring three runs in the first, two in the second, and one more in the third. First baseman Alex Pener drove in three runs himself with a two-run home run in the first and a single in the second.

The Woodchucks struck back in the fifth. Catcher Kyle Mrozinski (Wisconsin-Stevens Point) led off the frame with a double and scored on a single to center from Nolan Ryan (Henderson State).

But that was all the offense the Chucks would muster. Green Bay added another in the bottom half of the fifth on Ty Jandrowski’s second RBI single of the evening to restore the six-run lead.

The Chucks allowed five runs in the first two innings, but the bullpen was rock solid: three pitchers combined to allow six hits across the final six frames. Together, Kevin Bolder (St. Cloud State) and Armando Gonzalez (Barry University) kept the Bullfrogs off the bases entirely in the last three innings.

Jared Tobey got the win with six strong innings, while Gordon Cardenas took the loss. The Woodchucks will be back at it tomorrow against these same Bullfrogs, but at home for the 2017 home opener at Athletic Park in Wausau.
