Woodchucks Legend:

Darin Ruf

Darin currently plays as a first baseman and outfielder for the San Francisco Giants. He was born on July 28, 1986, in Omaha, Nebraska, USA. Ruf played college baseball at Creighton University, and was a part of the Woodchucks team in 2007, and was selected by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 20th round of the 2009 MLB draft. He made his MLB debut for the Phillies on September 14, 2012.

Ruf played for the Phillies from 2012 to 2016, primarily as a first baseman and left fielder. He then played for the Samsung Lions of the Korean Baseball Organization (KBO) in 2017, 2018, and 2019 before returning to the Phillies in 2020. Ruf’s time with the Samsung Lions was highly productive, as he was one of the most productive hitters in the league. In 2017, he hit 31 home runs and had 124 RBI, leading the KBO in both categories.

Upon returning to the MLB in 2020, Ruf continued to show his power-hitting ability. Despite limited playing time, he hit 5 home runs and had a .517 slugging percentage in just 87 at-bats for the Giants. He also demonstrated versatility, playing both first base and left field.

Ruf’s success in the KBO and ability to produce in the MLB has made him a valuable asset for the Giants. In 2021, he contributed throughout the season, finishing with a .271 batting average, 16 home runs, and 43 RBIs in 262 at-bats. He also played in all three outfield positions and first base.

During the 2022 season, Ruf was traded to the New York Mets, where he is signed through the 2023 season.

Overall, Darin Ruf is a power-hitting player with versatility on the field. He has shown an ability to produce in both the MLB and KBO, and his continued success with the Mets will be something to watch.
