Wausau, WIS- The Wisconsin Woodchucks split their two-game series with the Battle Creek Bombers after dropping the second game in the set 7-2 Wednesday.
After a half inning of play, the scoreboard at Athletic Park was identical to Tuesday’s scoreboard. The Bombers scored two runs in the opening frame, the first of which came off a home run from leadoff hitter Dan Swain.
The Woodchucks cut the lead in half in the second as Owen Taylor opened the inning with a single and Ramsey Romano doubled him home.
Battle Creek scored four runs on four hits in the fourth and fifth innings, extending their lead to 7-1. The Bombers kept the Woodchucks from scoring again until the ninth, when the game got interesting.
Ryan Day led off with a triple and scored on a wild pitch to make it 7-2. Tanner Gragg walked and Nick Gotta singled before Al Molina struck out for the first out in the inning. Ryan Howard then hit a towering shot over the left field wall that was inches from making it a two-run ballgame.
Instead, it was ruled a foul ball and a long strike two for Howard. He was then hit by a pitch, which set the stage for LJ Hatch. However, Hatch grounded into a double play to end the ballgame.
The Woodchucks three-game homestand continues tomorrow against the Green Bay Bullfrogs at 7:05 p.m.
