Wausau, WIS- The Wisconsin Woodchucks were swept by the Madison Mallards in a doubleheader at Athletic Park Monday by scores of 6-0 and 2-1.
Madison jumped out to an early lead in the first game of the double dip with four runs on four hits in the first inning. Cameron Frost singled to bring home the fourth run, which was scored by Chris Tschida. On the play, Madison tried to score Scott Tyler from second too, and he was thrown out at home by Taylor Kohlwey.
Jared Skolnicki, who started the game for the Chucks, settled down after the rocky first inning. He faced just 14 hitters in his next four innings on the bump. Skolnicki finished the day with five earned runs, seven hits allowed and four strikeouts in five innings pitched.
The Chucks’ best scoring chance came in the sixth inning. Max Ponzurick singled and LJ Hatch doubled to make it second and third with two down. Albee Weiss would pop out to end the threat.
The Mallards tacked on runs in the fifth and seventh innings to seal the 6-0 victory. Skolnicki got the loss, and Andrew Beckwith earned the victory with six innings of shutout ball.
Madison also got the scoring started in the second game. The Mallards crossed one run in the first and another run in the third, both off RBI singles from Jean Ramirez.
Wisconsin got on the board in the fourth inning with a leadoff solo home run down the right field line from Owen Taylor. It was Taylor’s third homer of the season.
The Chucks would only bring nine hitters to the plate in the final three frames. Ty Black singled in the fifth, but he was then caught stealing second base.
Eli Kraus and Zach Stone covered all seven innings on the mound in the shortened contest. Stone gave up just one hit and held the Mallards scoreless in four innings out of the bullpen.
The Woodchucks head out on a six-game road trip now, consisting of two-game sets with the Battle Creek Bombers, Kalamazoo Growlers and La Crosse Loggers.
