Lakeshore Allows No Hits Through Six and No Runs Through Eight in Win
Mequon, Wis.- Tuesday night, the Lakeshore Chinooks took a no-hit bid through 4.1 innings. Wednesday, they took it through 6.1 and did not allow a run until the top of the ninth inning, when the Wisconsin Woodchucks finally broke through for a pair. But by then, it was too little, too late as the Chinooks (23-20; 5-3) had already built up a big lead and won the game 10-2 over the Woodchucks (17-26; 2-6) at Kapco Park.
Chucks starter Drew Hanson tossed a quality start his first time out, but the high-powered Lakeshore offense ensured his outing Wednesday would not go as well. In the first, Nick Gatewood doubled home a run and scored on a Rylan Thomas single to put the Chinooks up 2-0. Hanson got the first two men in the second to pop out behind home plate, but then Jack Dunn doubled and scored on a Matthew Mika single and TJ Raguse walked and scored on an error to put Lakeshore up 4-0.
Hanson worked a 1-2-3 third, but the Chinooks got back to him in the fourth. Dunn doubled home a run and scored on a sac fly to make it 6-0. Hanson got a scoreless fifth and gave way to Degan Harte, who tossed a scoreless sixth behind Wisconsin’s third turned double play of the ballgame. Lakeshore struck for one unearned run in the seventh before putting the game out of reach in the eighth. The Chinooks walked and singled off Beau Zeihen before Joe Duncan hit a three-run shot, his third homer in as many nights, to cap off the Lakeshore scoring and make it 10-0.
Meanwhile, Chinooks starter Alec Marsh was lights-out in his third start of the year. He allowed just two baserunners and no hits through six innings before Wisconsin finally got going with one out in the seventh. Stevie Mangrum singled but was cut down on the basepaths, but then Brylie Ware and Yeager Taylor both singled and Adonis Lao, in his season debut, walked to load the bases. The Chucks would not score.
They threatened in the eighth against Marsh but could not crack him. Zack Engelken came in to preserve the shutout, but the Woodchucks got to him quickly. Taylor walked and got to second on an error, and Lao singled through the left side to put men on the corners. Hunter Coleman sent a shallow fly down the right-field line and Lakeshore right fielder Caleb Dean somehow lost the ball, allowing Coleman to reach and Taylor to score. After Chad Fleischman narrowly missed hitting one out of the park, Trey Dawson popped up to first, but Rylan Thomas dropped the ball, allowing Lao to score. Coleman was thrown out trying to round third, however, shutting the door on any slim chance at a comeback and securing the 10-2 Lakeshore win.
Wisconsin has still not been shutout this season, and the Woodchucks will look to rebound tomorrow night in Rockford. Andreas Papageorge will start his first game of the season for the Chucks against the Rivets’ Brad Littleton, with first pitch at 6:35 PM.
