“I could not be more pumped up about this hire,” stated Big Sticks Field Manager, Kelby Coburn. “Hiring the right man to handle our pitching staff was of the utmost importance to me and I have no doubt in my mind we got the right guy in Coach Tapia. This guy is a workhorse, who is intelligent as all get out, and loves to see his players grow and develop! This mindset fits in perfectly with what we are trying to accomplish here in Badlands this summer.”
Michael Caveney is currently an assistant coach at his Alma mater, Brunswick Community College in Bolivia, NC.
Caveney also spent the 2023 summer coaching for the Big Sticks as an assistant coach working with hitters and outfielders.
Michael had coaching stops at Southwest Baptist University as the recruiting coordinator and hitting coach, and Queens University of Charlotte as the student assistant.
Caveney started his college career at Brunswick Community College in Bolivia, NC. Spending three years at Brunswick, traveled with the Dolphins during his Redshirt year to the NJCAA D2 World Series in Enid, OK where the Dolphins won their first ever World Series game against Monroe CC. (NY) In the 2018-2019 season, Michael helped the dolphins achieve a 40-win year, falling short in the region championship to Pasco-Hernando. Having the 2020 season cut short due to Covid, Michael and the Dolphins were off to a hot start at 11-3.
Michael was also an associate regional scout for USA Baseball NTIS Southeast and Northeast for two summers now and spent three weeks in August coaching the respective regional teams.
“Coach Caveney was a steal of a hire to complete this staff,” said Big Sticks Field Manager, Kelby Coburn. “Just getting to know him throughout this process, I can tell we have an elite human on our hands. Michael lives and breathes recruiting, player development, and the offensive side of the ball. His connections, eye for talent, and overall love for the game are pivotal pieces in the next step forward for the Badlands organization!”
