Here’s an update on the status of some of the Northwoods League alumni that were in big league camp at Spring Training:

OF Jay Gibbons (Manitowoc, ’96-97) was released by the Florida Marlins.

The Chicago Cubs optioned RHP Justin Berg (Wisconsin, ’03) to Triple-A and reassigned OF Doug Deeds (Mankato, ’01) to minor league camp.

The Braves reassigned C Phillip Britton (Waterloo, ’04) to minor league camp.

The Tampa Bay Rays reassigned INF Chris Nowak (Rochester, ’01/03) and C Nevin Ashley (Eau Claire, ’06) to minor league camp.

Texas optioned RHP Thomas Diamond (St. Cloud, ’02-03) to Triple-A.

The Yankees reassigned RHP Mark Melancon (Duluth, ’04) and C Kyle Anson (Madison, ’02) to minor league camp.

Cincinatti reassigned C Chris Denove (St. Cloud, ’02-04) to minor league camp.

OF Chris Frey (Duluth, ’04) was reassigned to minor league camp by the Colorado Rockies.

Oakland reassigned RHP Brett Hunter (Alexandria, ’06) to minor league camp.
