Mike Hollenbeck (Illinois State University) let a potent late inning offensive attack with four hits including a home run and a double as the Lakeshore Chinooks pounded the Madison Mallards in a rain shortened 11-3 win in eight innings Friday evening from Warner Park.
The junior catcher launched a two-run home run in the second inning plating teammate John Norwood (Vanderbilt University). Noorwood singled home Ryan Krill (Michigan State University) earlier in the inning to give the Chinooks the lead.
Starter David Lucroy (East Carolina University) held the Mallards to just three runs in 4 2/3 innings of work despite issuing seven walks during that time frame. Relievers Tim Faix (Kent State) and Eric Handhold (Florida) surrendered just two hits in the final 3 1/3 innings.
The offense exploded in the eighth inning as Lakeshore sent 11 men to the plate in a seven run outburst. Chris Manning (Valparaiso University), Sawyer Polen (Kent State University) and Brant Valach picked up three RBI hits with only one out on the scoreboard. The inning was punctuated on a grand slam home run from newcomer John Norwood that give the Chinooks an eight run lead.
Hollenbeck’s for hit night earned him the Northwoods League "Player of the Night" honor. He became the second Chinook player in the last week to receive that award. Chris Manning did so in a game against Green Bay on Tuesday.
The game was delayed and eventually called in the top of the ninth inning due to rain. The same two teams will get together Saturday at Kapco Park for Pennies for Gold Giveaway presented by Paragon Numismatics at 6:35.
