Second Half Begins With Bang on Independence Day

The second half of the 2013 Northwoods League season began on Independence Day and the Lakeshore Chinooks got things started with a bang.  The offense picked up 12 hits and capitalized on four errors in a 9-4 win over the Green Bay Bullfrogs at Joannes Stadium in Titletown

Aaron Machbitz (South Dakota State) got the offense started in the second with an RBI single to left to score Jerrick Suiter (TCU).  After Cody Bobbit (Wichita State University) reached on an error, Andrew Stevenson (LSU) cleared the bases with a two RBI double to push the lead to 3-0.

Lakeshore took advantage of three Green Bay errors adding single tallies in the third, fifth, and sixth innings and jumped out to a 6-1 lead.

Joe Greenfield (Eastern Illinois University) backed the offensive output with a strong performance on the mound.  The right-hander went six innings and allowed two earned runs on five hits and struck out seven to earn his second win of the season.

Suiter added an exclamation mark in the seventh inning blasting his fifth home run of the season to make it 7-2 Lakeshore.

After Green Bay picked up a run in the seventh, the Chinooks got it back with a two spot in the eighth on back-to-back RBI singles from Mike Papi (University of Virginia) and Brant Valach (Eastern Illinois University) and effectively put the game out of reach.

Green Bay added another in the eighth, but Karch Kowalczyk (Valparasio University) came back and pitched a scoreless ninth inning to seal the victory.

The two teams will be back at it Friday before Lakeshore heads back out on the road for a two game series with the Wisconsin Woodchucks over the weekend.
