Mequon, WI- The Lakeshore Chinooks (13-12) fell to the Fond du Lac Dock Spiders 8-4 on Monday night, dropping the first game in the two-game set against the Spiders.

The Spiders would get off to a strong start in the top of the 1st, thanks to a 2-run double from Nick Fortes, scoring Chris Cornelius and Brandon Wulff, giving Fond du Lac the early 2-0 lead.

Jacob Richardson (Southern Arkansas) quickly cut the Chinooks’ lead to just one in the bottom half of the inning, as he singled home Joe Duncan (Eastern Illinois) after Duncan had reached on a one-out single earlier in the inning.

In the top of the 2nd, Collin Ridout led off the inning with a double, later coming around to score on an AJ Lewis RBI single, pushing the lead of the Spiders to two once again.

The Chinooks had a golden opportunity in the bottom of the 2nd, as Matthew Mika (Central Florida) stepped up to the plate with the bases loaded. Mika cashed in, smacking a two-run double that scored Daniel DeSimone (Oklahoma State) and Mitch Mallek (St. Cloud State), tying the game at three.

In a wild play in the bottom of the 4th, Rylan Thomas (Central Florida) tapped a ball in front of the plate that was picked up by the catcher, and as the catcher threw the ball to 1st base, Matthew Mika made a dash for the plate, coming home to score. The run for Mika gave Lakeshore the 4-3 lead.

Chinooks’ starter, Aaron Winkler (Richmond), got into some trouble in the top of the 5th, as he hit a second straight batter to load up the bases. The Eric Gilgenbach hit-by-pitch brought home Chris Cornelius, as the game was tied at four. K.V. Edwards then singled home Andrew Bullock, as Fond du Lac took the 5-4 lead.

Later in the inning, Collin Ridout hit a grounder to Matthew Mika at shortstop that looked to be a double-play ball, but after Mika flipped the ball to Jacob Richardson at 2nd base, a bad throw to 1st base took Daniel DeSimone off the base, allowing a run to score. Nick Fortes came around to score, giving the Spiders a two-run lead.

In the top of the 7th, Spiders’ K.V. Edwards tapped a ball to Chinooks’ pitcher, Josh Serio (UW-Milwaukee), but Serio couldn’t make the play, as Edwards reached 1st base safely and allowed Andrew Bullock to score.

Andrew Bullock added another run to the Spiders’ lead in the top of the 9th on a solo home run. The long ball was Bullock’s fifth of the summer, as Fond du Lac took an 8-4 lead.

The Lakeshore Chinooks (13-12) will head to Fond du Lac tomorrow to face the Dock Spiders again with Cole Gnetz (Miami-Ohio) taking the ball for Lakeshore with hopes to split the two-game set with Fond du Lac.
