In game one of this doubleheader, the Lakeshore Chinooks (12-17) defeated the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters (16-14) 6-2 Thursday night at Witter Field.

In the top of the second inning, the Chinooks struck first. Avery Owusu-Aseidu drew a leadoff walk and advanced to second base on a throwing error by Rafters starter Ryan Kysar. Brady Counsell then got on base after seeing four balls to put runners on first and second with one out.

Josh Overbeek took advantage of the situation by singling to right field, putting Lakeshore up 1-0. Two batters later, Gabe Roessler hit a bases-clearing double off the center field wall to give the Chinooks a 3-0 lead heading into the bottom half of the inning.

Lakeshore drove in three more runs in the top of the fourth inning. Counsell hit a leadoff single to get on base for the second time in the game. Will Johannes reached first base on an error that also moved Counsell over to third base.

Roessler came through once again as he hit his second double of the night to center field, scoring two runs and putting the Chinooks ahead 5-0. Drew Townsend kept the line moving as his RBI single gave Lakeshore a 6-0 lead.

The Rafters pushed one run across in the bottom of the fifth inning. Nolan Sailors drew a one-out walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Sailors moved over to third on a groundout and eventually scored on a wild pitch as Wisconsin Rapids trailed 6-1 going into the sixth inning.

The Rafters would score one run in the final inning but it was not enough to overcome the four-run deficit, leading to the Chinooks’ 12th victory of the season.

Roessler led the way for Lakeshore, going 2-for-3 with two doubles and four RBIs. Townsend went 2-for-4, scoring one run and earning one RBI.

Lakeshore starter Matthew Mueller (W, 1-1) prevented Wisconsin Rapids from getting on the board until the bottom of the fifth inning. Mueller pitched six innings, giving up one hit and one earned run while walking four batters and striking out six.
