BATTLE CREEK, Mich. — The Richmond Flying Mummies (1-2) saw a tight pitchers’ duel unravel late Saturday night, falling 11-4 to the Battle Creek Battle Jacks (3-0) after a six-run eighth inning broke the game open.

Both teams were held scoreless through the first inning despite early pressure from Battle Creek. Flying Mummies starter Kai Keamo worked around a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the first, striking out three batters to keep the game scoreless. Battle Creek struck first in the second inning, taking a 1-0 lead before Richmond answered in the third. With two runners aboard, Landen Fry ripped a two-run double to give the Mummies their first lead of the night at 2-1.

The Mummies threatened to extend the advantage in the fourth, loading the bases with nobody out, but failed to bring a run across. Battle Creek capitalized in the bottom half, tying the game at 2-2 entering the fifth inning.

Keamo’s final line in his season debut included 4.0 innings pitched, one hit allowed, two runs — only one earned — along with six walks and seven strikeouts across 86 pitches. Despite occasional control trouble, the left-hander repeatedly escaped damage and kept Richmond in position through the middle innings. Richmond’s bullpen initially kept the game level, with Owen Weeks delivering two scoreless innings in relief, striking out two and escaping a bases-loaded jam in the sixth with the help of a clutch inning-ending double play.

The game shifted dramatically in the seventh inning as Battle Creek plated three runs to seize a 5-2 advantage. The Battle Jacks then broke the contest open with six more runs in the eighth inning, turning a competitive game into a rout. Richmond managed two late runs in the ninth inning to trim the final margin to 11-4, but the comeback effort came far too late.

Despite collecting nine hits in the loss, the Flying Mummies stranded multiple scoring opportunities throughout the night, including the bases-loaded threat in the fourth that loomed large as the game progressed.

The Flying Mummies return to action tomorrow morning with first pitch scheduled for 11:05 a.m. ET.
