Border Cats Drop Game 1 of Superior Cup in 15 Innings
It took the Duluth Huskies 15 innings to beat the Border Cats. A two-run RBI triple from Trevin Esquerra in the 15th inning was the difference maker for the Huskies as they took the lead and the Border Cats were unable to tie the game.
The Border Cats once again got off to a quick start and led 4-1 going into the fourth inning. In the Huskies half of the 4th inning, they tied the game and it stayed that way all the way until the 15th inning. The Cats came close to winning in the 14th inning but grounded out into a triple play.
Offensively the Cats combined for 14 hits with some standout performances. Garret Saunders went 3-6 with an RBI. Mark Vierling also went 3-6 with a walk. Nick Conti went 2-6 with an RBI.
On the mound, John Sakowski pitched 3 2/3 innings while striking out 4. Jack Rasmussen replaced Sakowski and pitched two solid innings of his own. He was then replaced by Andrew Gross who also pitched a couple solid innings. The ball was then handed off to Max Christoff who finished the game for the Cats and picked up the loss.
The Cats are back in action tomorrow in Duluth, MN. as they will faceoff against the same Huskies in Game 2 of the Superior Cup. You can follow the action from the Border Cats Twitter page tbbordercats.
