The Thunder Bay Border Cats got back into the win column on Thursday in Rochester as they outlasted the Honkers 9-5 in 10 innings. The Cats let a 4-1 lead slip away, but tied the game 5-5 with a run in the top of the eighth inning, and pushed across four runs in the tenth as Thunder Bay improved its first place record to 11-4.
Alex Urlaub (Charleston Southern University), drove in the winning run with an RBI triple off the right field wall, Lucas Terilli (Eastern New Mexico University), then added a run scoring single, before Kyle Morrison (Shelton State CC), capped the uprising with a two-run double. The red hot Terilli went 3-for-6 at the plate with a pair of RBI’s and two runs scored while Jacob Miller (Jefferson CC) raised his team leading batting average to .386 by going 3-for-5 with a double, one run batted in, and two runs scored.
Kansai Sugimoto (Yavapai CC), made his first start since picking up the NWL Pitcher of the Night award in his previous outing against Duluth on June 6th. The Japanese righthander allowed six hits and three runs (two earned), over 5 2/3 innings with six strikeouts. Max Ramirez IV (Niagara University) pitched two scoreless innings in relief for his first win of the season.
The Cats and Honkers close out their two-game set Friday at Mayo Field at 7:35pm ET. Righthander Caleb Bunch (Northwestern State University) gets the start on the mound for Thunder Bay. The Cats return home Saturday to face the Wausau Woodchucks at 6:35pm ET in a battle of the top two teams in the Northwoods League. Thunder Bay native Jack Pineau is the scheduled starter for the Great Plains East Division leaders. The stadium ticket office is open Friday from 11:00am to 3:00pm.
