Doubleheader Split Wednesday
FOND DU LAC, Wis. – After five runs in four games played at Herr-Baker Field this season, Wausau figured it out on offense en route to a 9-1 win Wednesday night.
It was all Wausau (4-5/24-20) right from the start, as four runs were scored in the first two innings of the game. Colin Brueggemann (Oklahoma State) started the scoring party with an RBI double in the first, one of eight extra base hits in the game.
Brent Widder (Evansville) and Jake English (Kansas) would each have two doubles, and Mark Shallenberger (Evansville) would hit a triple which extended his hit streak to seven games.
As part of a five-run fifth – what set the Woodchucks in the driver’s seat over Fond du Lac (4-6/17-28) – Brueggemann hit his second home run of the season, English hit his second double of the game, Ryan Blackwell (Oral Roberts) hit his first double of the season, and Widder drove in two runs with a single.
That was the last inning scoring for Wausau, and Fond du Lac would avoid the shutout with a ninth inning run.
Key Moments:
The combined pitching staff of Matt Milner (SW Oklahoma State) and Dominick Reid (Oklahoma State) went the full nine innings, only allowing two hits and one run. Milner picked up Wednesday night’s win, and Reid struck out five batters in the four innings pitched.
Widder had five hits in the game, the most by any player on the Woodchucks in a single game this season.
