All across the country, Chucks alumni from the past couple of summers have had very notable spring seasons with their colleges. It was a season of achievement, and it’s worth applauding and acknowledging former Woodchucks for their continued improvement.

With all the noise and chaos that the Evansville Purple Aces have caused on the Division 1 scene, it was very heartwarming to watch as four former Woodchucks helped lead their program to its best finish in history. Simon Scherry, Brent Widder, Chase Hug and Mark Shallenberger all played for the Chucks, and all were starters for Evansville. Widder, Shallenberger and Scherry played 65 games for the Aces this season while Hug, who dealt with injury, played 39. In 2022, Scherry was the only one of the four who did not play for Wausau, while last year, Hug was the only one who didn’t play for Wausau. They helped their team win the MVC (Missouri Valley Conference), the Greenville Regional, and forced a game three against #1 overall Tennessee, coming just one game short of the College World Series.

In 2022, Brent Widder was the lone first-half Woodchuck All-Star, playing 39 games and batting .286. His defensive-prowess was also on display during the 2023 season, as he led all NCAA D1 infielders in defensive runs saved at 12.7. He was also the runner-up for the MVC Defensive Player of the Year award.

Chase Hug hit 9 HR to lead the Chucks in 2022.

Chase Hug batted for .278 with 35 hits and 31 RBI. His SLUG % was the 5th best on the Aces, coming in at .508. In the 2023 season, Hug was named the MVC Player of the Week twice; he was also chosen for the MVC All-Tournament Team and the MVC All-Defensive Team.
