Dickinson, ND- The Big Sticks welcomed themselves into the Northwoods League with an outstanding 10-5 victory over the Duluth Huskies after a booming 6 run 4th inning.
Carpenter started off strong, knocking in the first run of the season on a ground out to second base. Duluth would add their first run at the top of the 2nd after an RBI double from Ethan Cole, who would go 2-4 on the night. The 4th inning boom all began with back to back walks drawn by Ellis and Paczkowski. Nekoliczak would single for the first of three RBIs he would have on the night. Troy Berg really flipped this inning upside down with a two run double to knock in some more runs. The Hometown Kid had a spectacular night, ending the night with 2 hits and 3 RBIs. Appelwick would knock in the last run of that inning with an RBI single. Tyler Conklin had a great start to the season, where he would pitch five innings for the Big Sticks, recording 5 strikeouts, giving up only 2 hits and 1 unearned run.
Duluth still had some fight left in them, though, as they had a 3-run 7th inning. MJ Sweeny would slam a 2-run homer, adding to his 3- RBI night. After a few walks, Grantham would have a RBI groundout to shortstop to give the Huskies four runs on the night, and would add another one in the 8th inning. In the 9th, however, they would meet the wall that is JD Kirshner. He would close out the night with three straight strike outs, leaving no chance for Duluth to make a comeback. The Big Sticks will finish their opening series tonight, with the first pitch at 6:35 against Duluth before they go on a week long road trip.
