Saturday’s Showdowns

The Beetles exploded in the first inning against the St. Cloud River Bats as they scored 11 runs. The Beetles took the game 11-0 after 5.0 innings and were led by Lindsey Caughel (Stetson) who earned his 8th win of the year. Caughel threw a complete game six hitter for the Beetles. All-Star short-stop Marcus Semien (California Berkeley) had two hits and drove in three runs on the victory.

Argo Leads Waterloo

Willie Argo (Illinois) led the Waterloo Bucks offensively in a 14-9 win over the Battle Creek Bombers Saturday night. Argo was 3-for-4 on the night with two runs scored and four RBI. Argo, a speedy 6’1’’ outfielder, is currently hitting .233 with 21 hits in 27 games.

Yount Throws Gem for Thunder Bay

Garrett Yount (Rollins College-FL) earned his second win of the season for the Thunder Bay Border Cats as they defeated the Willmar Stingers 7-2 at Port Arthur Stadium. Yount threw a four hitter over 7.0 innings while striking out six Stingers. He currently has a 3.41 ERA in 63.1 innings pitched and has struck out 38 NWL batters.

Friday’s Recap

The Rochester Honkers took game one of the double header 10-3 in front of 488 NWL fans. The Honkers used three-hit games from Matt Dittman (Illinois) and Ryan Hambright (Oregon) to lead the offense. The Honkers Phil Haig (Florida International) only allowed two hits in 6.0 innings of relief work. Jimmy Waters (Kansas) drove in two runs in the win as did Josef Terry (Cerritos College).

ESPN Anchor Bobble Head Night in Green Bay

ESPN SportsCenter Anchor and ABC WIPEOUT Co-host John Anderson will appear Tuesday August 10th for the Green Bay Bullfrogs “John Anderson Bobble Head Night” at Joannes Stadium. The first 500 people in attendance will receive a commemorative bobble head featuring John Anderson as a 14-year old who won the Babe Ruth Baseball City Championship in 1979 playing for the National Merchandising Company (NAMCO).

Terry Drives in Three for ‘Chucks

Patrick Terry led the Wisconsin Woodchucks over the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters by a score of 8-7 in front of 1,604 NWL fans. The ‘Chucks catcher had two hits on the night and drove in three runs. Terry also homered in the game and scored two runs. He is now hitting .299 with 14 extra base hits and 27 RBI.

Jones Throws Well in Shutout

Tyler Jones (Madison College) earned his 4th win of the season as he beat the Eau Claire Express 7-0 Friday night at the ‘Duck Pond’. The 6’4’’ 205 pound righty threw a 6.0 inning six hitter while not allowing a walk. His ERA is currently 2.13 in 55 innings pitched.

Thursday’s Recap

The Waterloo Bucks took the first game of the double header by a score of 3-0 against the Battle Creek Bombers. The Bucks jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead after two innings as Andrew Ewing (Iowa) and Landon Anderson (Dallas Baptist) scored. Waterloo tacked on another run in the fifth when Ryan Rieger (Santa Clara) hit a solo homerun. Jared Wagoner (Butler) threw a complete game two hitter to earn his sixth win of the season for the Bucks.

Nivins Has Three Hit Night

Tanner Nivins (Stony Brook) led the Thunder Bay Border Cats to a lopsided victory Thursday night over the Mankato MoonDogs. Nivins 3-for-5 night with three RBI and three runs scored led to 17-5 victory in Thunder Bay, Ontario. The center fielder is now hitting .276 with 16 extra base hits and 29 RBI.

Wagoner Throws Complete Game

Jared Wagoner (Butler) earned his 6th win of the season Thursday night as he beat the Battle Creek Bombers 3-0. Wagoner, a 2010 All-Star, threw a complete game two hitter. The 6-fot-2, 185 pound righty currently has a 3.82 ERA in 11 appearances. He has pitched 70.2 innings this summer and has struck out 50 while only walking 18. Jason Wheeler (Loyola Marymount) improved to 8-0 after beating the Duluth Huskies 4-3 in St. Cloud.
