The Minnesota Mud Puppies are a breed all their own for the 2021 Northwoods League season. Following the news that the Thunder Bay Border Cats would not be participating in the 2021 season due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and its impact on Canadian travel and businesses, the Northwoods League got to work planning adjustments to the 2021 season. With a desire to salvage as much of the original home schedules as possible for the remaining nine teams in the Great Plains division, the concept of a “road warriors” team started to take shape.
The Mud Puppies name is a throwback to 1994 and one of the original five teams in the Northwoods League – the Dubuque Mud Puppies. The Mud Puppies played three seasons in Dubuque, IA, before relocating to St. Cloud to become the St. Cloud River Bats in 1997. Notable Mud Puppies alumni include Jeff Weaver, Shawn Sedlacek and Rob Quinlan.
ON THE ROAD AGAIN
The Minnesota Mud Puppies are unique in that they will only play a 36-game road schedule, picking up the road games originally scheduled for the Thunder Bay Border Cats. The team will be based out of the Twin Cities region of Minnesota, with all players living or staying locally with family. The team will appear in division rankings, but will not be eligible for the playoffs.
WHO ARE WE?
The Mud Puppies players meet the same eligibility requirements as any other Northwoods League player, and will have the same opportunities for recognition. Mud Puppies players are eligible for mid-season and post-season All-Star honors, selection for the Major League Dreams Showcase, and being ranked among League leaders. They will also have access to game video and their personal Trackman data like full-time players.
Sean Repay, former Bismarck Larks and current Dawson Community College Head Coach, will serve as the Mud Puppies Field Manager. Repay was the Field Manager for the Larks for their first three seasons in the Northwoods League.
Repay brings multiple years of collegiate coaching experience at every level including NCAA D1, D2, D3, NAIA and Junior College; as well as extensive experience working in summer leagues, high school, academies and as a professional scout. After a successful college playing career at Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa, Repay spent a couple of years playing professional baseball as a pitcher before starting his coaching career.
Dawson Community College hired Sean Repay to be their next Head Baseball Coach in May of 2020. Repay worked in 2020 at the NCAA Division I level at the University of Toledo where he assisted the pitching staff and aided in all facets of the program. Previously, he was the pitching coach at Indiana University Southeast, a Top 10 NAIA program, helping them win a conference championship in 2019. Three of his pitchers that year were named 1st team All-Conference. Prior to his time at Indiana University Southeast, Repay spent four seasons as the associate head coach/recruiting coordinator at Lakeland University, a Division III school in Plymouth, Wis.
