Fyffe Gives Beetles Another Solid Start

Matt Fyffe (Eastern Kentucky University) pitched very effectively early for the Alexandria Beetles. Fyffe did not figure in the decision as the Beetles defeated the Rochester Honkers in extra innings. In his six innings of work Fyffe allowed just a single, unearned run on four hits while striking out six.

Castillo’s Clutch Hits Lift Beetles Over Bombers

After working the count full with two outs in the 10th inning, Keith Castillo (USC) grounded a single through a hole on the right side of the infield, driving in the go-ahead run for the Alexandria Beetles. Castillo also drove in a run on a single to center and would later score the tying run in the ninth inning. Castillo ended the night 4-for-5 with two RBI and one run scored in the Beetles victory over Battle Creek.

Miller Dominate Out Of Beetles Bullpen

Alexandria relief pitcher Matt Miller (Michigan) did an excellent job shutting down the Bombers in the late innings. Miller entered the game in the eighth and pitched three innings of one-hit baseball. Miller would strike out seven batters, striking out the side in both the seventh and the eighth innings, and record his second victory of the season.

The second half of the 2009 NWL season started Friday night with 8 games on the schedule. Harold Riggens (pictured) upped his league leading RBI total (30) in Madison's 9-2 victory over Wisconsin.

Courcha Helps ‘Cats To 4th Straight W

Adam Courcha (New Mexico) had a 3-4 night including a two-run single in the 2nd inning to lead the Thunder Bay Border Cats over the Brainerd Lakes Area Lunkers. Courcha had a triple and was hit by a pitch on the night. Courcha is now hitting .342 on the season.

Baruwa Lights Out For Mallards

Dan Burawa (St. John's) entered the game in the sixth inning for the Madison Mallards and continued his recent dominance of opposing hitters by striking out seven batters in four innings to close out the Madison victory over the Wisconsin Woodchucks.

CWS Star Calhoun Back In Eau Claire

For two weeks in mid-June baseball fans around the country found out what those in Eau Claire, Wisconsin have already known for two years; that Kole Calhoun is a special player. Calhoun, the 2007 Northwoods League co-MVP, went on a tear during the College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska with his Arizona State Sun Devils in front of a national television audience on ESPN.

Jones Blasts League Leading 9th & 10th Home Runs

The bulk of the Rochester offense came from the bat of Corey Jones (Cal State Fullerton), who blasted a pair of home runs to increase his league-leading total to 10. Jones hit a two run shot to deep right field in the third inning to start the scoring and give the Honkers a 2-0 lead. Jones capped the Honkers scoring in the fifth. This time his solo blast to right cleared the scoreboard and banged off the roof of a bungalow nestled behind it. Jones led the Honkers offense with a 3-for-4 day, including the two homers and scoring two runs and three RBI in their 4-1 win.
