The North Division leading Mankato MoonDogs (pictured) shutout the second place Alexandria Beetles 4-0 to take a 3 1/2 game lead to highlight a wild Saturday night in the NWL.

Roundy Cycle Fuels Rochester Win

The NWL’s leading hitter (.402 Avg.), Rance Roundy (UNLV), hit for the cycle against Thunder Bay to help the Honkers get back in the win column. His four hits and four RBI paced Rochester to a 9-2 win. Roundy delivered a single in the first inning and a RBI double in the third that tied the game at 1-1, but the biggest piece of his cycle came in the fifth. Roundy crushed his fourth homer of the year to give Rochester a 3-1 lead. He completed the cycle with a triple in the 7th inning. It was the 8th time in NWL History a player has hit for the cycle.

Varce Breaks Green Bay Single Season K Record

Zach Varce tossed 8 scoreless innings against the South Division leading Eau Claire Express but did not receive a decision as the as the game was scoreless until Eau Claire pushed across a run in the 10th inning to win. Varce gave up just five hits and recorded nine strikeouts to increase his league leading strikeout total to 60 on the season – 21 more than second place. He now owns the Green Bay single season record for strikeouts in a season. The previous record was held by Dave Roberts who fanned 59 during the Bullfrogs 2007 inaugural season. Saturday marks Varce's second Pitcher of the Night Award of the season.

The Alexandria Beetles won their franchise record 7th game in a row at Knute Nelson Memorial Park (pictured) and three games went into extra innings Friday in the NWL.

Roberson’s 5 RBI Helps Beetles To 7th Straight Victory

Tim Roberson (Florida Gulf Coast) knocked in five runs and scored twice for the Alexandria Beetles in their 10-6 victory over the Rochester Honkers. Roberson launched a three-run home run to go along with a RBI groundout and a sac fly. With the victory the Beetles broke a franchise record with their 7th straight win.

Clement Closes Door For Madison

Denny Clement (Texas A&M) received his second win of the year after recording the game’s final eight outs without allowing a run (his ERA remains 0.00) in Madison's come-from-behind 3-2, 12 inning victory over division leading Eau Claire. Clement also struck out five Express batters. Clement has not allowed a run in his 8 2/3 innings pitched and has struck out 14 batters for the Mallards.

Two Northwoods Leaguers On Team USA

USA Baseball announced the 22 members of its 2009 Collegiate National Team; including two players with Northwoods League ties. T.J. Walz (pictured) from Kansas, played for the Duluth Huskies in 2008 and Tony Zych (Louisville) was signed to play with the Madison Mallards this summer.

Argo Leads Waterloo Comeback In La Crosse

Willie Argo (Illinois) had three hits, scored three runs and had an RBI to lead the Bucks to a come-from-behind victory over the La Crosse Loggers, 9-6. Argo had an RBI single in the eighth to help secure the comeback for the Bucks. He also had a double and stole a base.

Holcomb Goes The Distance To Beat ‘Chucks

The Battle Creek Bombers used a complete game gem from Dan Holcomb (Evansville) as they defeated the Wisconsin Woodchucks by a final score of 5-1. Holcomb went the distance for the Bombers, allowing just one run and six hits while striking out five and walking just one. At one point he retired 9 straight batters. A solo home run in the 9th inning was the lone blemish for Holcomb.
