Former Battle Creek Bombers' catcher Tony Sanchez (Boston College) became the highest draft pick in Northwoods League history when he was selected 4th overall Tuesday by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 2009 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.

Cappetta Impressive In Double Header

Pete Cappetta (Illinois) went a combined 4-7 with a walk, four runs scored and five RBI's in Duluth's double header split with Eau Claire. He doubled and stole a base in the night cap, driving in four runs to lead the Huskies to a 10-5 victory. Cappetta is now hitting .340 on the year.

Jansen Pitches Mallards Back Into First

Starting pitcher Matt Jansen (2-1) (Purdue) was in control from the get-go, in posting seven innings of shutout ball while only allowing four hits. He struck out four and walked just one. The win moves the Mallards (9-3) back into a first-place tie with Battle Creek and Eau Claire.

Big Debut For Kvasnicka

For the Brainerd Lakes Area Lunkers the addition of Michael Kvasnicka (Minnesota) proved vital in their 6-2 win Monday night in Alexandria. Kvasnicka, making his season debut, went 3-4 at the plate with two singles, a double, a walk and scored a run to pace the Lunkers.

Robertson Out Duels Gates In Rochester Victory

Zach Robertson (Iowa) out did counterpart Aaron Gates (Pepperdine) and threw 7 shutout innings to lead the Rochester Honkers to a 1-0 victory over the La Crosse Loggers. The game was a 0-0 affair until the bottom of the 6th when Rochester was able to push a run across. Robertson allowed just four hits with seven strikeouts and two walks and improved to 2-1 on the season.

O’Neil’s 10th Inning Homer Gives Beetles Win

In the top of the 10th inning the Alexandria Beetles got their lead-off hitter on base but a fake bunt-swing resulted in a line drive double play. The inning looked bleak until Mike O'Neill (USC) stepped to the plate, drilling a pitch over the right-center field wall to put the Beetles up 3-2. They would hang on in the bottom half for the victory. O'Neill finished 2-5 on the night. It was the 3rd home run and 9th RBI of the season for the 5'9" Beetles lead-off hitter.

Lukanen Pitches Bullfrogs to Victory

Chuck Lukanen (Northern Illinois) shut down the Wisconsin Woodchucks on Sunday allowing only two hits in seven innings on the bump. He also struck out four and walked three to earn his second win of the season for the Green Bay Bullfrogs.
