Kingfish Win With Walk Off Single

The opening weekend at Simmons Field was nothing short of exciting and this late afternoon game today was no exception. The Kingfish won 4-3 in the bottom of the 9th with a walk off single from Spencer Gaa.

Similar to last night, the Kingfish struggled early on with errors. There was a total of four errors on the evening with the first coming in the top of the 1st.  Even with four errors on the night, the Kingfish were able to prevail with Steven Sensley and Ryan Fitzgerald making top ten plays.

Rico Garcia was on the mound tonight and did well for the Kingfish with three strikeouts and only gave up six hits on the night. The right handed pitcher from Hawaii pitched 7 innings and gave up only 2 runs on the evening. Garcia heated up as the night went on and got two of his three strikeouts in the 4th inning and was able to get out of a jam later in the 5th.

The MoonDogs scored in the top of the 1st with a single from Levi Scott. Scott, was the player of the night for the MoonDogs with four RBIs, and three hits including a home run. The game was tied 3-3 up until the bottom of the 9th when the Kingfish were able to rally.

The 9th inning started with a single from Zach Ratcliff followed by Steven Sensley reaching first on a hit by pitch.  Jordan Romero grounded out to the shortstop for out number one but that didn’t deter the Kingfish. The MoonDogs then intentionally walked Chris Godinez to have the bases loaded with one out.  Gaa, a freshman from Bradley University stepped up and singled towards right field to drive in Ratcliff and score the winning run.

The Kingfish are now 4-2 and hold the second place spot behind the Kalamazoo Growlers in the South Division. Tomorrow, the Madison Mallards make their way into town for a 7:05 game.
