Kenosha, Wis. – In the final matchup of a three game set with the Green Bay Bullfrogs, a sold out Simmons Field crowd witnessed a top-notch pitcher’s duel. The game went scoreless into the eighth inning, with both starters bringing their A-game for the affair. The Bullfrogs, however, came alive in the eighth and took the win with a final score of 3-0.
NWL All-Star Rico Garcia was nearly untouchable on the evening, stymieing Green Bay from the get go. He started the night striking out two of the first three batters and kept the trend going all night. He retired nine batters in a row and issued no walks to the 24 batters he faced. All told, Garcia totaled seven strikeouts in seven innings of shutout ball, leading him to be named the Northwoods League Pitcher of the Night. This is the second consecutive game a Kingfish hurler has claimed the honor (Dillon Mazzoccoli Monday).
The Kingfish bats threatened in the sixth with back-to-back singles from Chris Godinez and Pat Porter, but a rare triple play ended the inning. The story was similar in the seventh, when two errors benefited the Kingfish. Steven Sensley advanced to second and Kyle Brooks to first with one out. But once again Kenosha was held down by Green Bay’s pitching.
Green Bay scored two runs in the eighth against reliever Coley Thompkins and another in the ninth against Justin Peters. Despite the loss, Kingfish pitchers struck out an impressive 10 batters.
Despite the loss, the Wisconsin Woodchucks lost to the Lakeshore Chinooks 2-1 tonight. Therefore, the Kingfish remain just one and a half games behind a playoff position. The Kingfish face the Bullfrogs again tomorrow for another two game series in Green Bay while the Woodchucks face the North Division’s second place Duluth Huskies.
The Kingfish return to Kenosha on Saturday for the final two games of the home season. The series will be against the Battle Creek Bombers with Saturday’s game at 6:05 p.m. and Sunday’s at 5:05 p.m. Both games will be CCB Fan Appreciation Nights, Saturday night will have light up batons and Sunday will include rally towels.
