KENOSHA, Wis. — The Kingfish fought all the way back, but Battle Creek had the final answer in extras.
After Kenosha erased a four-run deficit with a four-run eighth inning, the Battle Jacks pushed across the deciding run in the 10th and beat the Kingfish 6-5 on Tuesday night at Historic Simmons Field. Battle Creek finished with 11 hits, while Kenosha was held to six in the loss.
Battle Creek struck first in the third inning on a sacrifice fly from Gehrig Goldbeck, then built its lead with a three-run sixth. Collin Taylor doubled home AJ Lucas, and Brendan Thompson followed later in the inning with a two-run single to stretch the Battle Jacks’ lead to 4-0.
The Kingfish finally broke through in the bottom of the sixth when Matthew Cormier launched his first home run of the season, a solo shot to left field that cut the deficit to 4-1. Battle Creek answered in the seventh, as Dayne Wimberly tripled home Thomas Cooper to make it 5-1. Wimberly finished 3-for-5 with a double, triple and two RBIs.
Kenosha’s biggest swing came in the eighth. Will Matuszak singled, Brian Gould walked and Noah Alvarez walked to load the bases. A wild pitch scored Matuszak, Hunter Snyder followed with an RBI double, Bennett Shealor drove in another run on a groundout, and Cole Ide tied the game with an RBI single to second.
That sent the game to extra innings, but Battle Creek reclaimed the lead in the 10th. After AJ Lucas moved the automatic runner to third with a sacrifice bunt, Wimberly singled to right to bring in the eventual winning run. Kenosha got the tying run to third in the bottom half, but Chris Iannuzzi finished off three innings of relief to earn the win.
Kyle Hirsch started for Kenosha and allowed four runs across 5 2/3 innings. Sam Yoder followed with 4 1/3 innings out of the bullpen, striking out five while allowing two runs, one earned. Yoder took the loss.
The Kingfish now turn the page to one final two-game series. Kenosha opens that set Wednesday night against the Wausau Woodchucks, with first pitch scheduled for 6:35 p.m. CT at Historic Simmons Field.
