Eddy Morgan will welcome back Northwoods League Coach of the Year Mark Moriarty and bench coach Cameron Castro as the Lakeshore Chinooks chase a second Northwoods League Championship. In addition, Morgan will add Missouri State’s Derek Mattea to the 2015 coaching staff.
Moriarty, who has the distinction of winning Northwoods League Championships both as a player (Madison 2004) and as a coach (Lakeshore 2014), returns for his third season of mentoring the Chinooks’ pitchers. Under his tutelage, last season’s staff led the league in team ERA for a second straight year with a mark of 2.92 and held opponents to a .220 batting average. Moriarty also serves as Morgan’s pitching coach as the coaching duo has helped transform the baseball program at Concordia University Wisconsin.
Prior to joining the Chinooks and CUW, the St. Scholastica grad had coaching stints at Concordia St. Paul (2012) and Augustana (2008-2011) where Moriarty’s pitchers helped lead the Vikings to their first-ever NCAA tournament appearance. As a college pitcher, Moriarty finished with the third most wins in school history (23), a 2.80 ERA, and was a 2006 All-American. Moriarty’s calm and steady demeanor has helped several talented pitchers develop during their summer experience including 2014 NWL All-Stars Andrew Elliott (Wright St.), Joe Pavlovich (UW-Oshkosh), and Jake Tuttle (UW-Milwaukee).
Cameron Castro returns to the Lakeshore staff for his second campaign after working closely with Chinooks hitters and position players during the 2014 championship run. A graduate of Lake Erie College, Castro will complete his third season on the staff at Defiance College in Ohio. With additional coaching experience with IMG Baseball Academy, Notre Dame Cathedral Latin High School, and the Ontario Blue Jays, Castro helps provide administrative support for the Chinooks staff. The easy going Castro also served as the team’s first base coach.
The newcomer to the staff, Derek Mattea, brings Division I playing and coaching experience from Missouri State. The 2012 MSU graduate serves at the Director of Operations after hitting .266 over a two year career during which he helped the Bears to their eighth Regional berth in 2012. This past summer, the Collinsville, IL native assisted the Forest City Owls of the Coastal Plain League as a hitting instructor. Mattea also gained valuable coaching experience working with John A. Logan College, Ziegler-Royalton High School, and serving as the head coach of the Southern Illinois Bullets, a 17U traveling team.
After quickly establishing a winning tradition at Lakeshore, Morgan and his staff are eager to work with the 2015 edition of the team and continue to develop and influence young college players as they work toward becoming the baseball stars of the future.
