You may recognize the player’s last name in today’s alumni report, Cody Yount. Nephew of MLB Hall of Famer and Milwaukee Brewers legend Robin Yount (also a Chinooks minority owner) and son of Larry Yount, who played professional baseball in the Houston Astros organization. Cody’s brother Austin also played in the Dodgers system while his cousin Dustin played in the Orioles system. With a very recognizable name in the baseball world, Cody Yount is out making a name for himself!
From Paradise Valley, Arizona, Yount attended Chaparral High School. Cody received an All-State honorable mention and helped lead his team to a state championship in 2008. He would start his college career with Pepperdine University. He saw action in 59 games during his three years as a Wave and made 18 starts. Cody also played in the prospect league for two years (2009 and 2010) for the Danville Dans and the Springfield Sliders.
In the summer of 2012, Yount received a call from the Lakeshore Chinooks to join the squad after the team lost a number of players due to injury. Cody joined the team in Eau Claire and stayed with the them through the final stretch of the season. In his first game with the Chinooks, he went three for four with an RBI. Yount also saw time at multiple positions in the infield for Lakeshore. Following his stint with the Chinooks, Cody made the move to Virginia Commonwealth University for his senior year.
Following in his dad’s and uncle’s footsteps, Cody was drafted by the Chicago White Sox in the 36th round (1,113th overall) of the 2013 MLB Draft. He was sent to the Bristol White Sox who belong to the Appalachian League. He saw time in 30 games throughout the season and finished his rookie season with a .195 batting average, collecting 16 hits, 5 runs, and 16 RBI’s. He also had an on-base percentage of .340. The Bristol White Sox didn’t quite have the season they had hoped for as they finished with a 20-45 placing them last in the Appalachian League West Division. The Chinooks will keep a close eye on Yount as he continues his journey and dream of making it to the major league level.
