On Saturday, right-hander Travis Hissong (Wright State) gave up one-earned run on seven hits in five and one-third innings. He struck out seven and secured the 6-2 win for the Chinooks over the Bombers.
Lakeshore second baseman Jake Noll (Florida Gulf Coast) drove in four runs and went 2-4 in the game.
The Chinooks scored three runs in the third inning. Center fielder Luke Meeteer (UW-Milwaukee) went 3-5 and had a double in the fifth. Noll hit a single that scored Meeteer, which made it 4-0.
Battle Creek scored two in the sixth, but the Chinooks responded with two runs . Catcher Zack Bowers (UGA) scored on a wild pitch by Bombers pitcher Joshua Leone in the eighth inning. Noll hit a sacrifice fly that scored Meeteer in the ninth.
Garrett Brummett (Wichita State) recorded a save in his first appearance of the summer. He pitched three and two-thirds shutout innings. Brummett struck out two and issued one walk.
In the second game on Sunday, the Chinooks came out swinging and collected 15 hits as a team.
Chinooks starter Ben Messenger was relieved by righty Joe Pavlovich in the second inning. Pavlovich, a second-year Lakeshore player out of the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, surrendered one run off four hits in six innings of work. He also had one strikeout.
Bowers scored on a fielder’s choice by left-fielder Matt Honchel (Miami-OH) in the fourth inning. Battle Creek led Lakeshore 4-1.
The Chinooks tacked on three more runs in the sixth and eighth, but the big comeback was in the final inning.
In the ninth, Jake Noll led off the inning with a triple. He scored on a Michael Morman (Valparaiso) triple. Morman scored on a wild pitch by Jordan Grossjean. Ryan Krill and Honchel both hit singles. Pinch-hitter Brett Siddall (Canisus) hit a 3-run homer to win the game, 9-5.
Sterling Koerner (Florida Gulf Coast) received his first win of the season. He pitched the eighth inning. Koerner gave up one run on two hits and struck out one. RHP Bryce Beeler (Memphis) pitched a scoreless ninth.
Bombers reliever Grossjean (0-1) was charged with the loss. He gave up five runs on seven hits in two innings.
The Chinooks (4-2) travel to the Kalamazoo Growlers for a two-game series Monday and Tuesday. They will return home Wednesday for a four-game homestand versus the Wisconsin Woodchucks and Wisconsin Rapids Rafters.
