Mequon, WI – Following a 1-0 victory over the Rockford Rivets on Tuesday, the Chinooks traveled back to Kapco Park to face off against their division rivals once again on Wednesday. However, the Chinooks wouldn’t be as lucky in game two, falling to the Rivets by a score of 2-1 to split the series.
Tyler Jandron (UW-Parkside) started on the mound for the Chinooks, making his fourth appearance and third start of the season. Jandron has been lights out since he transitioned into a starting role on July 1st, posting a 1-0 record with a 0.58 ERA and tallying 10 strikeouts in his 15.1 innings of work for Lakeshore.
Cory Wright (Parkland CC) started in the bump for Rockford, making his tenth appearance and third start of the year. Coming into Wednesday, Wright held a 3-1 record with a 2.96 ERA, recording 13 strikeouts and issuing 13 walks in his 30.1 innings pitched for Rockford.
The Rivets struck first in the top of the second. A two-out single by Hunter Steinmentz (Missouri State) got things going for the Rivets. Then, an RBI double by Gavin Johnson (Rice) scored Steinmentz from first to put the Rivets on the board.
The Rivets tacked on one more in the third on a solo home run by Hunter Hargrove (Texas Tech) to give the Rivets a 2-0 lead.
The Chinooks answered in the bottom of the fifth. A one-out infield single by Royce Ando (Michigan State) got things going for Lakeshore. Then, an RBI double by Cody Ducote (LSU) drove in Ando from first to put the Chinooks on the board.
Tyler Jandron was taken out of the game after pitching 8.0 phenomenal innings, giving up only two runs on four hits and striking out five. Joe Stoll (Ohio State) took over in relief for the top of the ninth and held the Rivets scoreless despite giving up back-to-back singles to put runners in scoring position.
The Chinooks tried to battle back against Rivets’ reliever Jacob Ruder (Crowley) in the bottom of the ninth. A lead off ground rule double by Owen Miller (Illinois State) got things going for Lakeshore. A ground ball to first by Matt Reardon (Florida Gulf Coast) advanced Miller to third, but two consecutive ground outs to short by Joe Duncan (Eastern Illinois) and Royce Ando to give the Rivets the 2-1 win and series sweep over the Chinooks.
Though he has a terrific performance, Tyler Jandron was issued his first loss of the season, bringing his record to 1-1 on the year. Cory Wright was awarded his fourth win of the year after holding the Chinooks to one run on five hits, issuing three walks but racking up four strikeouts in his seven innings of work. Jacob Ruder picked up his second save of the season as he came in to pitch ninth and shut the door for the Rivets.
With the loss the Chinooks drop their second half record to 3-5 with a 18-26 overall record, while the Rivets improve to 5-3 during the second half and 22-22 overall.
The Chinooks travel to Kenosha to face off against the Kingfish in game one of a two game series on Thursday, starting at 6:35pm.
