Wausau, WI – The Lakeshore Chinooks took a tough loss Thursday night to the Wisconsin Woodchucks and the two ball clubs squared off again Friday night. After a low scoring pitcher's duel, game two of the series resulted in a 1-0 Chinooks victory.
On the mound for the Chinooks was Marshall Kasowski (Houston) who had another fantastic outing. Kasowski made his sixth start on the season for the ball club and came into the game with a 1.87 ERA and a very impressive 57 strikeouts in his 38.1 innings of work.
Kasowski came out strong right from the start as many of his pitches were hitting 90 mph and continued to get faster all throughout the night as his fastball was hitting 92 mph. After going six innings while racking up 12 strikeouts, Kasowski would be taken out after he threw yet another strong outing and did his job by holding the Woodchucks scoreless.
Righty pitcher Reggie Meyer (University of Minnesota) got the start for the Woodchucks and made his first appearance against the Chinooks this season. This was Meyer’s fourth start of the season as he came in with a 6.31 ERA in his 15.2 innings pitched. Meyer was also strong on the mound as he threw six scoreless innings while racking up 5 strikeouts.
Taking the mound in the bottom of the seventh from the Chinooks bullpen was Luke Sommerfeld (Saint Louis) as he held the Woodchucks scoreless during a tight inning.
The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the eighth when Tim Dalporto (Kent State) led off the Chinooks order with a single off of Woodchucks relief pitcher Degan Harte (Grand Canyon University). James Bleming (Lehigh) came into run for Dalporto and stole second. Harte was quickly taken out of the game and replace on the mound by Woodchucks lefty pitcher Kevin Bolder (St. Cloud State). Cody Ducote (LSU) stepped up to the plate for the Chinooks and blooped an infield RBI single that scored Bleming to put the Chinooks on the board and gave them a 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the eighth, Chinooks Manager Eddy Morgan called in Nick Horvath (Florida) who made his second appearance on the mound against the Woodchucks this season. Horvath would seal the deal for the Chinooks in the bottom of the ninth as he struck out three straight, earned the save and secured the 1-0 win for the Chinooks.
Matt Reardon (Florida Gulf Coast) had an impressive night at the plate as he went 3-3 along with Joe Duncan (Eastern Illinois) who went 2-5.
The Chinooks return home Saturday as they take on the Kalamazoo Growlers in game one of a two game series. First pitch will be at 6:35pm.
