Green Bay, WI- The Lakeshore Chinooks (4-7) found their winning ways Friday night, as Shane Smith (Miami-Ohio) pitched 7.2 strong innings to help defeat the Green Bay Bullfrogs 5-3. The win for Lakeshore snapped a six-game losing streak.

The Chinooks once again struck early in this game, starting out with a Drake Lubin (Eastern Michigan) leadoff single in the top of the 1st. Lubin later scored on an RBI single from Zach Biermann (Polk State), giving Lakeshore the early 1-0 lead. The Bullfrogs were fortunate to only allow one run, as the Chinooks loaded the bases with one out but were not able to cash in.

Kody Matthews (Marhsall) led off the top of the 3rd for the Chinooks with a double and later came around to score on a Jacob Richardson (Southern Arkansas) RBI groundout, pushing the Lakeshore lead to 2.

In the top of the 7th, Woodchucks’ reliever Will Gilbert walked the bases loaded, setting the stage for Jacob Richardson. Richardson eventually walked, bringing in another run and giving the Chinooks the 3-0 lead. With Zach Biermann batting, Gilbert threw two wild pitches, allowing Drake Lubin and Nick Gatewood (Georgia State) to score, giving Lakeshore a commanding 5-0 lead.

The Bullfrogs would tack on a couple runs in the bottom half of the inning, starting with an RBI double down the right field line hit by Alex Pener. The double brought in Kyle Benyo and made it a 5-1 game. Later in the inning, an RBI groundout by Willie Bourbon allowed Brad Hamilton to score and cut the Chinooks’ lead to 3.

Green Bay cut even more into the Lakeshore lead in the bottom of the 8th inning on a Kyle Benyo RBI single, scoring Grant Frazer and making it a 5-3 game.

Brendan McGuigan pitched 1.1 innings of scoreless baseball for the Chinooks to finish off the game and secure a 5-3 victory for Lakeshore.

The star of the game was Chinooks’ starter Shane Smith, who went 7.2 innings, allowing 3 runs (1 earned) on 6 hits, walking 2 and striking out 7 to help guide Lakeshore to the win.

The Lakeshore Chinooks (4-7) head back home tomorrow night to again face the Green Bay Bullfrogs at Kapco Park at 6:35 as Sam Lund (Madison College) and the Chinooks look to sweep the two-game series.
