Mequon, WI- The Lakeshore Chinooks (12-9) defeated the Rockford Rivets, 4-1, as Alec Marsh (Arizona State) went the distance for Lakeshore, allowing just one unearned run over 9 innings against Rockford.
The first run of the game, and the only run charged to Alec Marsh, came in the top of the 3rd on a wild pick-off attempt at 1st base from Marsh, allowing Hunter Feduccia to come around to score.
The Chinooks got revenge in the bottom of the 3rd, as Rivets’ starter, Chase Kueter, threw a wild pitch that allowed Drake Lubin (Eastern Michigan) to score after he led off the inning with a double. The run tied the game at 1, and Lakeshore didn’t look back.
The bottom of the 4th for the Chinooks started out with a Mitch Mallek (St. Cloud State) single, and led to a Jack Dunn (Northwestern) RBI double that gave the Chinooks the 2-1 lead.
Lakeshore would tack on another run in the bottom of the 7th, as Jack Dunn led off the inning with a single, later coming around to score on a Joe Duncan (Eastern Illinois) RBI double that just barely stayed fair down the right-field line.
Tim DalPorto (Kent State) added an insurance run in the bottom of the 8th on an RBI single, scoring Mitch Mallek after he walked.
Looking to finish off the game, Chinooks’ Alec Marsh headed back out to the mound for the top of the 9th and worked around a leadoff single to retire the Rivets without allowing any runs, as Marsh finished off Lakeshore’s 4-1 victory over Rockford.
Alec Marsh allowed just one unearned run on six hits over 9 innings, as he walked just one and struck out six.
Over Marsh’s last three starts, he is 3-0 with a 0.38 ERA, allowing just one earned run over 24 innings. During that span, Marsh also has a 0.92 WHIP, as he’s allowed just 22 base runners over 24 innings. Even more impressive, Marsh has struck out 24 batters.
After his start today, Marsh said, “I was feeling pretty good. I was just trying to compete in the zone with what I had today. I didn’t think I had my best stuff today. I wasn’t striking anybody out, but I was getting groundballs and popups, taking advantage of the wind.”
Marsh was also not shy when saying he felt that he could go the distance. “We were joking around the last couple days, because my coach was telling me I need to go more than seven or eight innings, so I told him this next start I’m gonna try to go the whole way.”
“Coming in after the eighth inning, I told coach, I’m only at 90 pitches, you gotta let me go.”
Before coming out for the ninth, Marsh said he didn’t have to convince Eddy much let him go out there. “I wasn’t really on a short leash. I still had about 15 or 20 pitches to work with, so thanks to him [Eddy Morgan] for letting me finish off the game.”
The Lakeshore Chinooks (12-9) head to Rockford to face the Rivets again Friday night, as Austin Jones (UW-Whitewater) and the Chinooks look to complete the 2-game sweep of the Rivets.
