ROCHESTER, Minn. — As Kyle Anson rounded first base in the top of the ninth, the Madison Mallards second baseman was sure his shot to right-center field would tie the game. But Anson’s — and the Mallards’ — victory hopes were foiled as the right fielder for the Rochester Honkers, Andre Ethier, dove and ended the game with a spectacular, rally-ending catch. Trailing 3-2 going into the ninth, Brett Berglund singled and reached second via Dominic Ramos’ sacrifice bunt. An Erik Johnson fly-out brought Anson to the plate with two outs, and he proceeded to hit the fateful line drive. Brady Endl took the loss for the Mallards, despite allowing only three earned runs through 6 1/3 innings. At the plate Nick Cadena paced the Mallards, going 2-for-4 with two doubles and a run scored. The Mallards take the field again Saturday at 7:05 p.m. for the second game of a three-game series in Rochester.
