THUNDER BAY, Ontario – Jake Habsieger allowed three hits, three walks and an unearned run in seven innings to lead Thunder Bay over the Madison Mallards 3-1 in a Northwoods League game watched by 1,015 fans Saturday night at Port Arthur Stadium.
Habsieger worked seven innings before the bullpen kept the Mallards under wraps the final two innings. Habsieger (1-0) outdueled Madison’s Corey Cabral, who allowed two runs – one earned – on four hits and a walk. He struck out 10 in 6 innings.
Dan Soukup hit a home run and Brooks Shankle and Mike Zambriczki each knocked in runs for the Border Cats (1-3), who are still in last place in the North Division.
Madison, now 2-3, fell to fourth in the five-team Southern Division.
