Two more members of the 2003 Madison Mallards first-half champion team will be back at Warner Park this summer. Butler?s Jon Olson and University of New Orleans? Mike Rohde are the latest names on a list of players returning to Madison for the summer. Along with Olson and Rhode comes Bristol, WI native, Daryl Maday.
Maday, a freshman at the University of Arkansas, brings another solid arm to the Mallards pitching rotation. The Westosha High School graduate is 3-0 in his first season at Arkansas with a 3.38 ERA. The big right-hander (6?1?, 235), was taken in the 43rd round of the 2003 MLB Draft by the Milwaukee Brewers.
One of the individuals Maday will look toward for veteran leadership this summer is Jon Olson. Olson, the Butler University junior and Kenosha native, returns to the Mallards coming off of a 2003 season which included being named the starting pitcher in the Northwoods League all star game in Madison.
Rejoining Olson this summer in Madison is Mike Rohde. The University of New Orleans third baseman will return to Madison to add to the 42 games played as a Mallard in 2003. The 2002 Brookfield Central (Brookfield, WI) alumnus batted .230 in Madison last season, scoring 9 times and knocking in 13, he also managed to swipe 5 bases while playing several positions in the Mallards infield. He is currently rehabbing an injured shoulder but is expected to be ready by the Mallards opener on June 2nd in Wausau
The latest additions bring the Mallards to twelve players signed for the 2004 season. So far the Mallards have inked ten returnees from the 2003 season and two new players, Maday, and Madison native Ryan Zink.
The Mallards 2004 home opener is June 9th at 7:05 P.M. against the Mankato MoonDogs. The Madison Mallards set a Summer Collegiate Baseball record averaging 4,411 fans per game for a season total of 136,751 fans in 2003.
