The Madison Mallards have signed two more players for the upcoming 2004 season. Infielder Abraham Aguirre and two-way player Mike Dury are the latest additions to the Mallards roster.
In 2003, Aguirre led Midland College (Tex.) with a .379 batting average. As a freshman he also scored 54 runs and had 38 RBI. In 2004, Aguirre is batting .293 with five home runs and 39 RBI. Aguirre?s play caught the attention of Oklahoma State University who signed him to a letter of intent to play for the Cowboys in 2004-2005.
In addition to Aguirre, the Mallards have also signed University of Notre Dame freshman Mike Dury. In his first collegiate season, Dury has pitched and played first base. Dury has had 12 at bats this season, hitting one home run and scoring four runs. In his nine appearances out of the bullpen, Dury has recorded a 2-0 record and a 2.89 earned-run average. As a senior at Bishop Chatard High School in Indianapolis, IN, Dury was named Indianapolis area athlete of the year.
The latest additions bring the Mallards roster to twenty-six players signed for the 2004 season, including ten returnees from the 2003 season.
The Mallards begin their season June 2nd in Wausau against the defending champion Wisconsin Woodchucks. The Mallards start action at the Duck Pond June 9th at 7:05 PM against the Mankato MoonDogs. The Madison Mallards set a Summer Collegiate Baseball record for fans in 2003, averaging 4,421 per game and a registering a season total of 145,896.
