With only nine games left in the second half of the 2004 Northwoods League season, the Madison Mallards find themselves in a very favorable position after defeating the Rochester Honkers 3-1 Sunday night in Rochester. With the victory and a Waterloo loss, the Mallards moved two games ahead of the Bucks and three and a half games ahead of the Honkers.

Four Mallard pitchers combined to scatter seven hits while allowing only one run. Tony Korson earned his first victory of the season, pitching two and one third innings of scoreless relif of starting pitcher Mark Moriarty. Zach Peterson and Matt Petty combined to throw the final two and two third innings with Petty earning his sixth save in as many chances.

Jared Johnson contiuned to play well on the road for the Ducks, going 2-4 with an RBI and a run scored, helping the Mallards jump out to an early 1-0 lead. Chad Frk and Jay Johnson each went 2-3 for the Ducks, with Johnson knocking in a run and Frk scoring one.

The Mallards (35-20, 17-7 second half) travel to St. Cloud for a Monday, Tuesday series before heading home for the final homestand of the regular season. Wednesday the Mallards take on the Mankato MoonDogs in a day/night doubleheader with game one beginning at 1:05.
