The 2006 Madison Mallards season is approaching quickly. This past weekend, the Mallards had nearly all of their incoming players in action for their respective college teams. Be sure to check out the “Roster” link on the menu to follow the players and their college teams. Here are some of the standout performances from this past weekend.

Creighton, which boasts two incoming Mallards, is seeded fourth in the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament, which starts Wednesday. Last week, catcher Chris Gradoville had three hits in six at-bats for the Bluejays. Reliever Scott Reese earned his seventh save in Creighton’s lone win last week.

UNC-Charlotte claimed the fourth-seed in the Atlantic Ten Championship, which starts Wednesday. This past week, 49ers catcher Kris Rochelle had a pair of doubles among his four hits. He also scored four runs. Outfielder Spencer Steedley had two triples and five RBI and pitcher Adam Mills picked up his eight win of the season. Mills threw six innings against Fordham and struck out seven while walking just two.

Illinois third baseman Mike Rohde was busy this past week as the Illini played six games. Rohde had at least one hit in all six, going 8-22 (.364 average). He also scored six runs and knocked in four. Illinois clinched a spot in the Big Ten Tournament and will be seeded fifth. The Illini will face Minnesota Wednesday at 11 a.m. CDT.

Michigan State outfielder Ryan Basham hit .300 in six games for the Spartans this past week. Michigan State’s season is over as they did not qualify for the Big Ten Tournament. Basham finished the year batting .363, which led the Spartans and ranked him fifth in the Big Ten. His .379 average in conference games was fourth-best in the Big Ten. He also hit eight homeuns and knocked in 53. His 53 RBI tied him for second in the conference and his eight homers were tied for third.
