After winning the team?s first game of 2006 last night, the Madison Mallards will try for a sweep of the two-game series against the Mankato MoonDogs.

The Mallards, with a record of 1-2, are just one game out of first place. Waterloo, Wisconsin and Eau Claire are tied for first in the Northwoods League South Division with the Mallards, La Crosse and Rochester all a game back.

The Mallards will send right-handed pitcher Brian Smith (pictured below) to the mound this afternoon. The Northern Illinois sophomore will be making his first appearance for the Mallards. Smith tied with two other pitchers for the most wins on the Huskies? staff this spring. He placed second on the staff in strikeouts, starts and innings pitched.

Today is St. Mary?s Senior Day. There is free admission to this afternoon?s game for everyone age 60 & over. The first 500 fans age 60 and over will receive a seat cushion.

There?s also something for the kids as it?s Quench Gum Bat Night. The first 1,000 fans (14 and under) will receive a Quench Gum Bat. Also, today is the first Famous Footwear ?Kids Eat Free Sunday? of 2006. Every Sunday this summer kids (14 & under) receive a free hot dog, soda and popcorn with a full-priced ticket courtesy of Famous Footwear.

The Mallards are also holding a Dane County Humane Society Fundraiser. Dogs are welcome at the ?Duck Pond? and fifty cents from every hot dog sold will go to the DCHS.
