With a 5-3 result, the Mallards tied the once Northwoods League record for most consecutive wins and are just one shy of tying the Green Bay Bullfrogs’ current record at 15 games.
Conceding a run in the first inning to the Bombers, the Mallards crossed three in the sixth to overtake the lead for good.
Brian Smith (W, 6-2) earned the win, proving six innings from the mound, allowing seven hits and three runs. Brett Scarpetta and Bubba O’Donnell (S, 12) closed out the game, allowing two hits (both from Scarpetta) and no runs.
Offensively, Bobby Hubbard came up big, hitting a perfect 3-for-3 with a run scored, three RBIs — two from a home run — and a drawn walk. Hubbard’s three hits accounted for half of the team’s production.
With Eau Claire defeating Green Bay 6-1, the Mallards remain a half-game back of the Express going into Wednesday’s series finale with the Bombers.
