Omaha, NE – June 25, 2008. Mallards sophomore infielder Alan Ahmady and freshman outfielder Trent Soares will arrive in Madison as National Champions. The Fresno State Bulldogs completed an improbable run through the postseason to defeat the Georgia Bulldogs 6-1 on Wednesday to win the series two games to one.
Ahmady was on fire through the postseason, hitting .354 (17-for-48) in 13 games, with 12 RBIs, 10 runs scored and a home run. He finished a remarkable season in which he had 92 RBIs, second-most in the NCAA’s.
The Bulldogs were this year’s Cinderella story, as they ended the regular season with a 33-27 record and won their conference tournament just to advance to the regionals. From there, they became the first number four seed to win a regional, upsetting two ranked teams in the process. The Bulldogs then had to travel to number three national seed Arizona State for the Super Regionals, where they defeated the Sun Devils two games to one to advance to Omaha.
In the World Series Fresno State beat Rice and North Carolina twice to make it to the best-of-three series against Georgia to decide the champion. Fresno State lost game one 7-6, before winning a 19-10 slugfest to even the series and take it to a deciding game three, which they won 6-1 Wednesday night.
The duo will be suiting up for the Mallards in the next week.
