Madison, WI — May 30, 2009. In the third annual Packers softball game benefiting the Wisconsin Firefighters Association, the Packers beat out the Madison local 311 firefighters 8-4 on Saturday afternoon at the “Duck Pond.”

Wide receivers Jordy Nelson and Ruvell Martin were the biggest names to don the Packer green, but it was the firefighters’ sloppy defense that gave way to the Packers’ huge rally in the third inning. Three errors in the inning led to five unearned runs.

However, the Packers do deserve some credit. Throughout the game, they took advantage of the firefighters’ miscues in the field to gain insurance runs after the third inning.

But the Packers also had difficulties in the field. In the bottom of the fifth, Green Bay’s inexperience showed when it made three errors that led to two runs for the Madison Fire Department. Then in the sixth inning, they scored again on yet another Packers error, but it wasn’t enough to catch up to Green Bay, which by that time had already scored eight runs.

All proceeds from the event benefited the Wisconsin Firefighters Association. After the game, the Packer players signed autographs for everyone in attendance. Be sure to listen in to 100.5 FM ESPN Radio tonight as the Mallards take on the Brainerd Lakes Area Lunkers at 7:05 p.m.
