Battle Creek, MI – June 9, 2009. The Mallards bats weren’t silenced for long. A night after being shut-out in a 6-0 loss, the team rebounded with a 15 hit attack and returned the favor in an 8-0 win over the Battle Creek Bombers at C.O. Brown Stadium Tuesday night.
The win moves the Mallards (9-3) back into a first-place tie with tonight’s opponent, the Bombers.
Leading the offense was a pair of Hawkeye teammates in sophomore center fielder Kurtis Muller (Iowa) with four hits and junior catcher Tyson Blaser (Iowa) with three. With tonight’s performance, Muller is now hitting .347 on the season.
Second baseman Mark Ginther (Oklahoma State) and first baseman Harold Riggins (NC State) also added two hits for the Mallards. Riggins’ also recorded two RBI to increase his league-leading total to 14.
Interestingly, of the team’s 15 hits, Ginther’s double was the only extra-base hit recorded.
Starting pitcher Matt Jansen (2-1) (Purdue) was in control from the get-go, in posting seven innings of shutout ball while only allowing four hits. Brad Allen (Elgin CC) and Dan Burawa (St. John’s) then finished the game with perfect eighth and ninth innings, respectively.
Bombers starter Eddie Sipple (1-1) (Florida Southern) recorded the loss after allowing two earned runs on eight hits through five innings.
The Mallards return home for a four game homestand beginning tomorrow, Wednesday, June 10 against the North Division-leading Duluth Huskies. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. with gates opening at 5:30 p.m.
