Madison, WI – June 12, 2009. Another game at home, another win in the books. So the story goes through eight home games this year for the Madison Mallards. The “Duck Pond” has been oh-so-kind this season and it was evident once again with a 9-6 win over the Duluth Huskies on Thursday night. The Mallards remained unbeaten at home and swept their fourth straight series at the friendly confines.

Cody Winiarski (MATC) moved to 2-0 on the season as he shut down the Huskies, allowing two runs (none earned) and scattering three hits over 6.2 innings. He went through an impressive stretch of retiring 18 batters in a row before giving way to the bullpen to close it out. Brad Allen (Elgin CC) notched his first save of the season, getting the final out in the ninth inning.

Troy Channing (St. Mary’s) went 2-for-3 with three RBI and his first home run of the season, a 2-run opposite field shot in the second inning. Jerrud Sabourin (Indiana) went 1-for-4 with a 3-run double in the eighth inning, providing much needed insurance in the 9-6 victory.

Tonight, the Mallards will send Jacob Esch (Georgia Tech) to the mound to make his first start of the season against La Crosse. The right hander posted a 4.82 ERA in 14 appearances for Georgia Tech last season and has given up a run in three innings of work so far this season.

He’ll go up against La Crosse’s Aaron Dott (UW-Whitewater) who boasts a 1-0 record and a 0.75 ERA in 12 innings spanning over two starts this season.

It will be Johnny Cash Night at the ballpark as the Mallards host the Loggers at 7:05 p.m. in the first of a two-game set. It will feature Johnny Cash’s original backing band, The Tennessee Three! A pre-game concert will take place on the field accompanied with autographs at the park and followed by a post-game concert at the Essenhaus. Also, Interstate Batteries will be handing out a shower radio to the first 1,000 fans 16 years of age and older.
