Last night’s Box Score
Madison, WI – June 13, 2009. Last night, Joe De Pinto (USC) sent the “Duck Pond” into frenzy after his game winning hit drove in Trent Soares (Fresno State) to cap the Mallards’ improbable 5-4 come-from-behind extra inning victory over the Loggers. It was the ninth straight win at home for Madison, who remains undefeated at Warner Park this year.
La Crosse starting pitcher Aaron Dott (UW-Whitewater) was nearly unhittable, allowing a hit while striking out seven and walking just two over 6.1 innings. He was perfect through the first four innings and was in line for the win, leading 2-0 upon his exit in the seventh. La Crosse (9-6) added two insurance runs in the eighth to give the bullpen all they needed to preserve the win, or so they thought.
The Mallards (12-3) battled back by getting at bats and base runners in the bottom of the eighth. They sent eight men to the plate and only mustered a pair of hits, but tied the game thanks to a few walks and a wild pitch. Madison starter Jacob Esch (Georgia Tech) did his best to keep the Mallards in a close enough game to have a chance at the end and he did, allowing two runs on four hits over six innings of work in his first start of the year.
Madison will go for its 10th win in a row at home tonight and send Matt Morgan (Purdue) to the hill. The right hander is 1-0 on the year with a 1.65 ERA.
Meanwhile, La Crosse will counter with right-handed pitcher Richie Erath (Florida Gulf Coast). So far this season Erath is 0-1 with a 2.57 ERA through 14 innings over 2 starts.
First pitch is slated for 6:05 p.m. at the “Duck Pond”. It’ll be “Turn Back the Clock Night” with free Muskies hats for the first 1,000 fans. Be sure to stick around after the game for a mesmerizing laser light show. Gates open at 4:30 p.m.
