Last night’s Box Score

Green Bay, WI – July 1, 2009. Cody Winiarski (MATC) will try to right the Madison Mallards’ ship tonight and reverse a three-game losing streak as the team heads north to Green Bay to battle the Bullfrogs in a 7:05 p.m. game at Joannes Stadium.

There are now two games left in the first half of the Northwoods League 2009 season as it’ll end with the completion of tomorrow night’s 6:35 tilt versus the Bullfrogs.

Right hander Winiarski, arguably the Mallards (18-14) most consistent starting pitcher, will toe the mound tonight after posting a 3-2 record and 2.21 ERA in 36.2 innings over five starts thus far. His best outing came on June 17 when he threw seven scoreless innings while striking out eight in a 12-0 victory over the Waterloo Bucks.

Meanwhile, the Bullfrogs will start left-hander Joel Delorit (UW-Stevens Point) who is 3-1 with a 1.97 ERA in 32 innings over five starts. He has performed well at home in posting a 2-0 record and 0.46 ERA in three starts at Joannes Stadium. His best outing came on May 31st when he threw seven scoreless innings while striking out six batters in a victory over the North Division Rochester Honkers.

Both teams are badly in need of a victory as the Bullfrogs carry a four-game losing streak and two straight losses at home into the contest while the Mallards have lost three straight. Madison is 2-8 in their last 10 days while Green Bay is 4-6.

After the two-game series in Green Bay, the Mallards then head to play the Wisconsin Woodchucks in Wausau beginning Friday. After an off-day this Sunday, the team returns home to Madison for two games against the Battle Creek Bombers on Monday at 7:05 p.m.

Even though Eau Claire has already won the NWL First Half Championship and a guaranteed spot in the 2009 postseason in August, each game is vital for improving the Mallards overall record if the Express are to win the second half title as well, meaning the team with the second best season record will earn the last spot in the postseason. Madison currently sits 2.5 games behind the Bombers (20-11) and 2 games back of the La Crosse Loggers (20-12).

Fans, the Mallards return home this Monday, July 6, for a two-game series against the Battle Creek Bombers beginning at 7:05 p.m. It’ll be Verizon Wireless Mock Uniform Night for the first 1,000 fans and recipients will have the opportunity to bring their t-shirts back to the “Duck Pond” on future dates to have their names affixed on the back for a small fee!
