Madison, WI – July 6, 2009. The Mallards return home after going 3-1 on their road trip and starting the second half of the Northwoods League season unbeaten following a two-game sweep of Wisconsin over the weekend in Wausau. Following a rare off day on Sunday, Madison will host Battle Creek in a two-game set beginning tonight at the “Duck Pond”.

The Mallards’ are coming off an 18-hit, 7-run outburst performance in their last win over the Woodchucks. How fitting that the team who led the league in nearly every offensive category in the first half provide fireworks on July 4 in a 7-2 win. Leading the attack was Joe Patterson (Texas A&M) who raised his average to .326 after going 4-for-5 at the plate while hitting his third home run of the season. Kurtis Muller (Iowa), Jerrud Sabourin (Indiana) and Harold Riggins (NC State) each followed with 3-hit efforts.

Madison (2-0) spotted its starter, Matt Jansen (Purdue), with two runs in the first and a 4-spot in the seventh to give him his fourth win of the season. The right-hander allowed a run on six hits over 5.2 innings.

Meanwhile, Battle Creek (1-1) currently sits one game behind the first place Mallards in the South Division. In the first half of the season, the Bombers finished only 1.5 games behind Eau Claire for the first half crown. They come off of a series split with Alexandria.

Madison will send Jacob Esch (Georgia Tech) to the hill to take on Battle Creek’s Josh McElwee (Newberry College). Esch is 0-1 with a slim 1.71 ERA over three starts this year. He holds a 15:7, K:BB ratio, over 21 innings pitch. McElwee is 2-2 on the season with a 3.66 ERA spanning over nine appearances (6 starts) and 39.1 innings pitched. He’s struck out 44 while walking only 17 batters this year.

First pitch in game one tonight is slated for 7:05 p.m. It’ll be Verizon Wireless Mock Uniform T-Shirt Night (first 1,000 fans). Arrive early as these items will not last very long. Gates open at 5:35 p.m.
