Last night’s Box Score

Duluth, MN – July 8, 2009. Fresh off a 3-1 start to begin the Northwoods League second half of the season, the Mallards look to get back on the winning track tonight against the Duluth Huskies in a 7:05 p.m. game at Wade Stadium.

Last night the Mallards (3-1, 22-16 overall) had to settle for a series split with the Battle Creek Bombers (2-2, 23-14 overall) as Madison was shutout 5-0 in front of 5,435 fans at the “Duck Pond.”

Mallards starting pitcher Cody Winiarski (MATC) received a no-decision after not allowing a run in six innings of work. Newcomer Garrett Granitz (Azusa Pacific) picked up the loss (0-1) after allowing three earned runs in two-thirds of an inning.

Meanwhile Bombers starter Matt Talley (The Citadel) received the victory (4-2) after throwing seven shutout innings.

At the plate the Mallards were led by soon-to-be announced NWL Mid-Season All-Star Harold Riggins’ (NC State) three hits, including his tenth double of the season. Riggins is now hitting .333 on the year.

Tonight Madison will give right-hander JR Graham (Santa Clara) his first start on the bump. Used primarily as a reliever, Graham will make a spot start as former Mallard Matt Morgan (Purdue) was scheduled to start Wednesday but had to leave the team due to an arm injury. Graham is 0-2 on the season with a 3.78 ERA in 16.2 innings.

The Mallards remain one full game ahead of four other South Division teams (La Crosse, Battle Creek, Green Bay, Waterloo) heading into tonight’s action.
